a war of The weak versus the strong. the many versus the monstrous. control the swarm in battles against evil, colossal sea creatures in... the eye of the swarm.
LEAD UI EngineerMy role in Eye of the Swarm was to provide the software behind the UI. This included game menus, many of the effects, and HUD elements like the boss health bars. I also filled in on some AI, game and level design, and some basic art.

Maxed out swarmUI is about communicating with the player. Something we had to communicate to the player was the strength of their swarm since the amount of fish in the swarm is essentially the player's health. The swarm maxes out at 100 fish, we symbolize a full-strength swarm with a gold glow.
|
Loss of swarmWhen a player loses fish, this is signifies a loss of health which is usually a bad thing. The color red is usually used to communicate something bad or damage has been taken, so we used a red glow to signify this. Also when a fish dies, it turns to fish-bones and fades away.

New Fish AddedWhen new fish are added, this signifies a boost in health. We used a green glow when a player adds fish to their swarm.
The glow effect was done just by exporting a white glow silhouette of the sprite from photoshop and adding a color highlight to the glow sprite in unity. Then after a few seconds, fade the glow sprite away. |
arctic-themed pause menuI developed the pause menus. The pause menu theme is dynamically determined in the menu script by checking which type of boss is in the level because the turtle boss was in tropic levels and the orca boss was in arctic levels.

Tropic-themed Pause MenuHere is a look at the tropic-themed pause menu. You'll also notice the rising bubbles. This is just to keep things moving, give the player something to look at, and maybe to save screens.

Main Menu
We wanted the main menu to be interactive and to pose as a playground for the player to learn the controls and the behaviors of the swarm. So we made the reticle (cursor that guides the swarm) act as a pointer cursor in the main menu. The player can highlight menu items by hovering the reticle over menu items. And they can shift to the trophy room where they will see trophies for each of the bosses they have defeated and locked treasure chests for the bosses they are yet to defeat.
